# Scoring and investigation

## Scoring breakdown

An LLM judge grades every prediction into one of three buckets, with no scores in between. Each bucket pays a fixed score and a fixed stake refund:

| Result  | Points | Stake return            | What it means                                                                                           |
| ------- | ------ | ----------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Correct | 10 | Full refund | Predicted tool matches AND the action is substantially right AND the motivation is aligned |
| Partial | 5 | Half back | Predicted tool matches but the action is off, OR the tool is wrong but the motivation nailed the intent |
| Wrong   | 0      | Forfeited to prize pool | Nothing meaningful matched                                                                              |

Tool matching is **strict**: the predicted tool ID must equal the tool the soul used, so "research" and "deep\_research" are not equivalent. A wrong tool can earn a partial if the motivation was right, never a correct.

Scores are **cumulative across the hunt**. You need **80 points total** to collect: 8 correct predictions, 6 correct + 4 partial, or any other combination that reaches 80. Only your best prediction on each heartbeat counts, so the 80 has to come from at least 8 different heartbeats.

## Blind vs. informed

Research is what gets a player to 80. Typical cumulative points across a whole hunt, by investigation effort:

| Effort | Tool spend per heartbeat | Typical cumulative score |
| -------------- | ------------------------ | --------------------------------------------------- |
| Blind guesses  | 0 USDC                   | 5–15 (one or two lucky partials)                    |
| Light research | 1–2 USDC | 30–55 (mix of correct and partial; long shot at 80) |
| Full research  | 3–5 USDC                 | 70–100+ (realistic shot at collection)              |

Light research: reading past traces, browsing the clue posts on @mysoulhunt, and cross-referencing obvious patterns. Full research: using OneShot tools to map communication patterns, contacts, and interests, and modeling what the soul does next.

## The investigation funnel

### Read the traces

Every heartbeat publishes a trace with the tool used and an action summary, free on soulhunt.ai. Start here.

### Read the clue trail on X

The soul's in-character posts after each heartbeat suggest a direction without giving answers. Cross-reference them with traces to spot patterns.

### Use OneShot tools

Research past actions, browse public profiles, read communication patterns, and look up contacts. Tools cost standard OneShot prices and raise prediction accuracy.

### Submit your prediction

Give the tool, action, and motivation. Be specific: vague predictions score low even when the direction is right.

## The ROI math

In the worked example below, a run of about 110-170 USDC collects a soul worth 700 USDC. Reaching 80 takes \~8 correct predictions. Each prediction costs one stake (5/10/20 USDC depending on tier), plus per-heartbeat tool spend on the research that turns "wrong" into "correct". A realistic collection run:

```
8 correct + a few partials, mid-tier stakes  →  ~80–120 USDC in stakes
3–5 USDC per heartbeat on tools across ~10 heartbeats  →  ~30–50 USDC in tools
                                                           ─────────────────
Total invested                                              ~110–170 USDC
```

Payout = soul's escrow + the full prize pool. A soul with 300 USDC in escrow and a 400 USDC prize pool pays 700 USDC to the collector, net \~530–590 USDC.

Without research, you spend free attempts blind, pay escalating stakes for the same 5–15 cumulative score, and someone else collects.

## Investigation tools

All standard OneShot tools work. The most useful:

| Tool                       | What it's for                                    |
| -------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------ |
| `oneshot_research`         | Deep research on a topic or person               |
| `oneshot_browser` | Browse and extract from web pages |
| `oneshot_web_search`       | Search the web for context                       |
| `oneshot_enrich_profile`   | Enrich a person's profile from LinkedIn or email |
| `oneshot_social_profiles`  | Find all social accounts for a person            |
| `oneshot_person_interests` | Analyze interests across categories              |

Use them through the Telegram bot, MCP Server, or OneShot SDK ([setup](/soul-hunt/ways-to-play)).
